The Catalan (pure) people share many similarities with the French, maybe even moreso than with the Spanish. They certianly look quite distinct from Portugese and other regions of Iberia.

That's not true at all, it's almost impossible to distinguish between "pure" Catalans and Catalans with Castilian surnames.
