The word 'Sorb' came to English from the German Sorbe whereas 'Serb' came to English directly from Serbian.

That is how it should be. But Sorbs are Lechitic and have highest amount of R1a among northern Slavs, being pred. M458, typical for Western Slavs. And the have almost no I2-dinaric.
While Balkan Serbs are mostly I2-dinaric and their R1a is pred. Z280, typical for Eastern Slavs, while smaller amount does have M458 (like my Serb ancestor)

Very possible, It is possible that modern Serbs and Croats descend mostly from Sclavenians from eastern Slavic lands (would explain their I2-din and R1a Z280), while those two tribes from western slavic lands have been mostly elites.

Serboi was allegedly Sarmatian group. Who escaped from their original homeland on Caspian shore under Hunnic onslaught to take shelter in Polish forests where they Slavicized inside the mass.

Both names have a different etymology. Its just a coincidence that they sound similar. Serbs/Sorbs are unrelated to Iranics. The word 'Serb' comes from the Proto-Slavic sьrbъ which means "ally". The word still exists in the Ukrainian присербитися (pryserbytysja) which means "to join".
