Turkish President Erdoğan to visit Budapest October 8-9

President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will visit Budapest on October 8-9 to attend the opening ceremony of the renovated Tomb of Gül Baba, the 16th century Ottoman Bektashi dervish poet, according to preliminary plans reported by news site atv.hu.

The Turkish leader is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and President of Hungary János Áder during his visit.

According to multiple reports, Erdoğan will also visit Germany to attend the opening of Europeʼs largest mosque in Cologne, before visiting Hungary. In Germany, he is set to meet President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The visit to Hungary comes following Orbánʼs visit to Turkey in July, when he attended Erdoğanʼs swearing-in ceremony following his re-election, signaling his elevation to both head of state and government.

The task of renovating the Tomb of Gül Baba, located on the Buda side of the city a short distance from Margaret Bridge in the Rózsadomb district, was entrusted to Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén, in cooperation with his Turkish counterpart, recalled news site index.hu. The government already indicated in May 2017 that the Turkish leader would attend the opening ceremony for the building, which is in the ownership of the Republic of Turkey.
