Although I do think, that retaking the Balkans would have been even more bloody. However: it would have remained under Austrian occupation. While that may not be nice, it would have been stable. But then, we would have still needed to deal with those blasted Habsburgs... WIthout the Russians to back then up, Serbia would have backed down in 1914 too. Probably would have been Austrian anyway.

As for some peoples' ideas that Eastern Europe is the traditionalist guiding light of Europe. Well, no. That hope can be buried as well.

They don't have to be traditionalists. Life is changing, the world is changing all the time. You seem to be a time traveler you had to come from 1809 and you don't want to accept that rule of life.
The truth is that EE will stay European ethnically (I am not sure about Central Europe). I have said this many times - stereotypes protect EE, no immigrants want to live in EE and that's great.
