If you’d like me to go more in depth, my German ancestors largely came to America and settled in Pennsylvania for religious freedom. They were South German and also Protestants.

Someone else mentioned that Pennsylvanians of German ancestry tend to be shorter with blue eyes and dark hair. That is because we mostly descend from south Germans of an alpine type.

As I’m sure you already the core geographical origin of the Pennsylvania Dutch is the historical Palatinates of the Rhein which is mostly in the modern German state of Rheinland-Pfalz. Anababists typically came from further south around Northern Switzerland but they were not the core population.

You are correct that the Alpine type is frequent in the Palatinates, but you should also know that the region is also perhaps the most Mediterranean in Germany as well.

As you might expect Palatinates are indeed slightly shorter than the German mean and closer to the French mean. And it is true that their pigmentation is slightly darker than the German mean.

As you may know Pennslvania Dutch is a Franconian dialect as is Dutch and The Palatinate dialect is closer to Dutch than Hochdeutsch is. The English had a hard time distinguishing Palatinate colonists from Dutch linguistically. For example Dutch Duits and Pennsylvania Dutch Deitsch are almost indistinguishable in pronunciation. Plus The Pennsylvania Dutch went up the Rhein to depart from ports such as Rotterdam in the Nederlands. Due to a combination of factors it is reasonable that the Nederlands Dutch colonists and the Pennsylvania Dutch were not distinguished by name.

It is not so much what they called themselves as much as it is what others called them.
