Russian Orthodox Church breaks with Constantinople in row over Ukraine

The Russian Orthodox Church said on Monday it had decided to break off all relations with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in protest over its endorsement of Ukraine's request for an "autocephalous" (independent) church.

Speaking in Belarus after a meeting of the Russian Church's ruling body, Metropolitan Ilarion, a cleric, said the Holy Synod had been left with no choice but to sever ties with the Patriarchate in Istanbul, seat of the global spiritual leader of roughly 300 million Orthodox Christians.

Ukraine last week secured approval from Constantinople to establish an independent church in what Kiev said was a vital step against Russian meddling in its affairs.

The Russian Orthodox Church called it the biggest split in Christianity for a thousand years. [Reuters]

What's the worse that would happen to Russia now that Ukraine split? They seem to be so passionately opposed to Ukraine splitting despite them both being hostile neighbors.

The Russian want to put bishops in Ukraine Church. The Ukrainians want a national church and
to put their bishops. E. P recognized the church (Ukrainian) but the Russians strongly opposed that, ignoring the will of Ukrainian people.

Nope, not even pan-Slavism. The Serbs will side with them, but that's about it.

Even they seem to be leaning more towards the West than Russia. At least Russia still has their three EEU friends, of which the only European member (Belarus) is almost like a puppet state.

True, but from the Church's perspective, the Serbian Church is firmly allied to the Russian. They don't want to see the Montenegrin and Macedonian Orthodox Churches recognized as per the Ukrainian Church.
I suspect all other Orthodox Churches will side with the Ecumenical Patriarchate on this issue and there will be a schism in the Orthodox world - sadly.

Don't care. They can make all the noise they want we are all free to make our choices.

Russia as always merely uses Orthodoxy as a political tool. If Ukranians want autocephaly then why should they be stopped other than petty politics.
