In Roman times, all one had to do to become a Jew was to comport oneself as a Jew and keep Jewish feasts, rites, and laws. There were Romans who converted, and then there were semi-Judaizers as well. The being rejected by a rabbi three times thing is a relatively modern phenomenon.
