Can white Americans distinguish between various European ethnicities?

Not at all, they are bliss about it, heck their "White American" standard is very broad to include people like Jews.

So most people are not aware.

To be fair there aren’t many South Americans in America also those countries are all way too mixed with Amerindian, European, African bloodlines all being mixed. I’m pretty aware white Americans can’t differentiate between various Asians and Africans but I wondered about Europeans since they descend from there.

And would think some puerto ricans are mexican.

Never heard of anyone confusing a Puerto Rican with a Mexican, but I've been mistaken as a Puerto Rican by Mexicans, so...

Fact is, people are more familiar with the things they have more experience with. If you live in a neighborhood full of Japanese and Koreans, you'll be able to tell the difference between between Japanese and Koreans.

They have bigger continental genetic differences. So why would you expect white americans to able to tell the differences between europeans. Unless they have very obvious accents that is mainstream. Like british or irish accents. But they wouldnt be able to distinguish similar accents or related languages accents like a polish person and a russian. Or dutch and a swede.
