    Default Fado

Fado, a type of Portuguese singing, traditionally associated with pubs and cafés, that is renowned for its expressive and profoundly melancholic character.

The singer of fado (literally, “fate”) speaks to the often harsh realities of everyday life, sometimes with a sense of resignation, sometimes with the hope of resolution. The music is performed by either a female or a male vocalist, typically to the accompaniment of one or two guitarras (10- or 12-string guitars), one or two violas (6-string guitars), and perhaps also a viola baixo (a small 8-string bass viola). Most of the repertoire follows a duple metre (usually with four beats to a measure), with a text arranged in quatrains or in any of several other common Portuguese poetic forms. Until the mid-20th century many fado performances featured a significant element of improvisation. Inevitably enriched with an array of emotive bodily gestures and facial expressions, fado aims—and indeed, is required—to evoke a penetrating sense of saudade (roughly, “yearning”).

There are two distinct styles of fado, the older of which is associated with the city of Lisbon and the younger with the north-central Portuguese city of Coimbra.

The Portuguese guitar or Portuguese guitarra is a plucked string instrument with twelve steel strings, strung in six courses of two strings. It is one of the few musical instruments that still uses Preston tuners. It is most notably associated with the musical genre known as Fado.

Katia was born on February 23rd 1976, in South Africa. Soon after her birth, her family returned to the island of S. Miguel, Azores, where she was raised. At the age of 15 she played the local instrument, a special kind of guitar, at the folk band “Rancho Folclórico de Santa Cecília”. It was the start-up of her musical career. When she graduated high school she went to Lisbon so she could attend the medical university. She became a doctor in 2000, but her academic years were also spent as the vocalist of a rock band “Os Charruas”.

In October 2000 she went on stage on a tribute concert to Amalia Rodrigues in Lisboa and she delighted the audience with the best performance of Fado of that night. In that moment, her career as a Fado singer came to life.

“FADO MAIOR”, her first record, was issued in June 2001, won the Jose Afonso Award and reached the top of sales in South Corea. “NAS MÃOS DO FADO”, her second record was issued in 2003 with carefully selected lyrics from the best Portuguese authors like Luis de Camões, Florbela Espanca, Ary dos Santos and António Lobo Antunes. This record was also nominated for the Jose Afonso Award, confirming a promising career.

As recognition of her talent, critics and the public gave her quite an amount of attention as the national and international media offered Katia special spotlights (documentaries, tv shows, etc). In Portugal she was formely awarded as one of the 30 personalities, distinguished by her work among the 30th anniversary of the April Revolution (one of the most important national holidays).

To be honest I can not see many similarities, it doesn't have the distinctive rhythms of the Portuguese guitar or the melancholic character of Fado.

Do the Portuguese dance it when they conquer a group of peoples and their lands? Manliness is next to godliness.

Gisela João (born November 6, 1983 in Barcelos, Portugal) is a Portuguese fado singer.

The album, Gisela João was number-one in Portugal and was Ípsilon/Público's and Blitz's record of the year.

Born in November 1983, in Barcelos, João soon developed a great interest and passion for Fado, mainly when she reached 8 years old. By the year of 2000, when she was 16/17 years old, João began to sing in "Adega Lusitana", in Barcelos. Soon after, she enrolled in a University in Porto, to study design. It was during her sixth year in Porto that she further immersed in Fado and the various Fado houses that she sang in. 6 years unfolded and João made her choice to settle in Lisboa, in an effort to further explore and develop herself as an artist and Fado singer.

Camané is the leading male singer in the new generation of stylists in Portugal's native urban song, Fado, ever since his first album came out in 1995 - and one of the few men working within this most tricky field.

Camané is also one of the most outstanding Portuguese singers to have come out of any generation; a voice so smooth and soulful, so impassionate and yet controlled that you wonder how such wise and weary vocal stylings can belong to someone so young.

That's probably because Fado runs through his blood from birth. We're about to share a secret with you if you promise not to tell: Camané was a child prodigy who sang Fado in his early teens.

It all began when seven-year old Camané was grounded at home with the flu and, being bored stiff, rummaged through his parents' record collection. All they had was Fado, so that was all he heard. And he loved it. Then he started singing it. Initially it was all in good fun, but after he won an amateur contest it became obvious there was more to it than that. Camané had his run as a child singer, and eventually grew out of it. Yet he never grew out of Fado. How could he?
