I think having a lot of middle names is a European thing, especially common amongst Catholics, who get a lot of saint's names at baptism.

I considered it rather as an American or Anglo-Saxon costum, tho have middle names.
It is unusual in our country to have middle names, though the number of holders of middle names is increasing since the 1990s, there.
It is true that catholics could recieve additional nmame from godparents, and next name during confirmation, but in our country were not ones officially used, during the last 150 years, mostly.
But exceptions existed, always.
