No their "overlords" changed. When Albanian tribes settled in their region Arvana (not to be confused with Arberia an entirely different region) they lost their self rule, and they worked for Albanian overlords, so a 'smith' probably got the Albanian name for smith, because that"s how his employer called him.

Albanian rule became too oppressive which is why they fled to Greece in the first place, after first trying to establish their autonomy in the mountains. But the Albanian gangs chased them all the way to Greece!

Arvanites were not Arberesh btw, Arvanites originate from Arvana which was an important outpost of the Byzantine empire which controlled vital routes between east and west, whereas the Arbereshi come from an entirely different region and are Albanian tribe.

Arvanites native language was Greek but like Asia Minor Greeks were billingual. Needless to say they had a strong Greek conscience and could prove their roots. Now there were also Arberesh that had moved to Greece for economical reasons, and gradually they too were called Arvanites, because they were billingual like Arvanites, after having lived in Greece for so long, and they both could understand and speak Albanian.

I've seen this behavior from Greeks on TA, and even on a few occasions outside TA (in places like YouTube and other forums). But for the most part, Greeks seem to like Bulgaria. Though this is just my view as an outsider and maybe doesn't mean much.

But anyways on the topic of thread, Bulgaria seems to be the least "aggressive" nation in Southeastern Europe. I rarely see them talking about taking back "lost territories" or making other nationalistic remarks. There's no real dispute between them and their neighbors. They even recognized [North] Macedonia's church. The relations between Bulgaria and all its neighbors seem to be either positive or neutral. Somewhat of an anomaly in the Old World (outside Western Europe).

Personally, I like the Greeks and Greece. Its the most westernized Balkan state (if its a Balkan state?) and as before - it should be a model for Bulgaria (many positives could be taken and applied here) and the wider Balkan region. Historically, the Greek influence on Bulgaria has been tremendous: cultural, religious, linguistic. All that we consider "typical Bulgarian" like orthodoxy, our culture, folk dances, food: its either shared with the Greeks or hugely influence by the Greeks. Like it or not, Greece has been a huge cultural influence on the whole of the Balkans (and wider region) since antiquity. As a whole I think we are in a great place now: where we can openly cooperate within EU and reconnect and be friendly. There is not denying that at present the best relations of Bulgaria are with Greece and Romania. And its only natural. We are extremely close with both nations. Yes, we have been rivals, but that doesn't mean we aren't extremely similar. And we are.

But that doesn’t mean that there is any animosity left,we respect each other’s territorial integrity,we share a common religion,Greeks love Bulgarian ski resorts and Bulgarians love our beaches.Our relations are as good as they can be.

It’s true that we Greeks have a superiority complex when it comes to our neighbors,we view ourselves as more educated,more sophisticated,more developed,more cosmopolitan and more affluent(and the fact that we received the poorest people from Bulgaria and Albania as immigrants is a factor too),but this mentality has started to change.

I agree about that, the heroes of one nation are the villains of others but that's not the reason not to have good relations and to cooperate with each other...

My Grandfather was in the Greek army and some guy from south Greece called him a Bulgarian and my grandfather broke his teeth.

As a Northern Greek I would do the same. South Greeks are very rude and hotheaded, especially those fucking Athenians (from personal experience)
