Hi,
For the most data you will want to take the Ancestry test. They have sold over
10 million tests. FTDNA has not sold 1 million of the equivalent tests, 23 are at 5 million. You can then download your raw DNA from Ancestry and upload it to MyHeritage, LivingDNA, GEDMatch, but not 23AndMe. You can't upload to Ancestry either and the Ancestry test is better, it's able to match you with more distant cousins than any other test. I also find Ancestry's ethnicity results are a bit better.
Then get the Y and MT tests from FTDNA. Start with the
Y-67 tests, which is the first one that is really useful in the genealogical time period. You can upgrade it later if you need to. It's about $90 off at the moment.
The
MT test is also currently on offer. Given the small number of people who have taken the test you are unlikely to find any relatives.
