The population of Syrians living in Turkey can increase to five million in the next 10 years, according to a report by the Ombudsman (KDK) published on Wednesday by the pro-government newspaper Sabah.
The document stressed that even if the war in the Arab country can be ended, many of the 3.5 million Syrian citizens that Turkey hosts will remain in the future because 'they started working and investing, they feel safe, and even if their income is low at least they have jobs.'
It pointed out that many refugees will find it difficult to return to Syria even if the war ends.
One of the indicators to establish that in the next 10 years the population of Syrians could reach five million is the age profile of this group today because 45 percent are under 18 years, which means 1.4 millions of people.
The report also highlights that most of them live scattered in all the provinces of the country, and a part achieved Turkish citizenship, and only 6.69 percent live in refugee camps.
Therefore, KDK stressed the importance of developing permanent and lasting policies for Syrians living in Turkey and suggested the creation of a strong coordinating body to work with the Directorate General of Migration, the Disaster Emergency Agency Management, the Turkish Red Crescent and the Undersecretariat of Public Order and Security, among others.
In addition, and to try to avoid possible social tensions, the institution also recommended that the Housing Development Administration cooperate with local administrations to build new social housing at low cost for Syrian refugees.
