Before 19th century there was only religious identity among peasants, only elite had some kind of identity , like high nobility.
That is why priests were instrumental to spead national feelings among masses in pretty much every ethnicity.

How then ppl in vojna krajina know they are Serb before 19 ceuntry? I saw bunch of documents.
It's different thing to be part of soms ppl( that they know for sure), and modern nation, it's true..

I didn't see them.
Anyway, I see in letter of Croatian counts Zrinski and Frankopan they considered themself Croats, that was 17 century. But among common people, I don't remember I encountered much.

It is true, national identity didn't exist and is today a product of the French revolution. Identity prior to the 1800s was probably more centered around local cultures and customs.
