So, if I say "Se kateram na drvoto" it means "I am climbing on the tree"!
"Katerica" is also used for squirrel apart from "Ververica"!
I think "Ververica" is the original Slavic word, while "Katerica" is of Balkanic origin!
We say 'kacham' for climb. Never heard of 'kateram'.

Borrowed from Russian. Many Bulgarian words are Russian borrowings.

Веверица or Верверица came from Serbian verb верање/veranje (верати се) which means climbing. Verb верање existed among Dalmatian Serbs, not sure for Serbs from other regions.
Word Veranda existed among Dalmatian Serbs, and originated from veranje/верање (climbing) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veranda

    Gjavol is Serbian Đavo.

In Bulgarian climb is: kachvam, izkachvam and katerya. The root kat \ kach is obvious. Gjavol - гявол is also used in slang and dialects.

Veranda is a popular word in Russian but veranje is absent. To climb in Russian will be "vzbiratsa, karabkatsa".

Verenje in Serbian is only climbing on the tree, not climbing on the mountain. As I said verenje was local term of Dalmatian Serbs, I herd from my grandparents. I'm not sure whether other Serbian users here know what verenje means.

Usual/mainstream word for climbing in Serbian language is penjanje.
