That would only happen if there were few men and many women. In the case of the URS and Nazi Germany after the Second World War, it would have served to increase the birth rate since many Soviet and German men died and many women were alone.

I agree that the majority of people are like this, but polyamory is a rare occurrence. I imagine there are exceptions to the rule, and there are a handful of relationships in the world where multiple people could be emotionally and physically involved at the same time with no issue.
