So, generations are long in my family. Also my father is the youngest of 5 brothers.

I was able to easily trace my direct paternal line back to year 1800 because it is only a few generations away.
In my maternal side, they are sometimes very longs. I'm born in middle 1980's. My parents are born in 1952, nothing surprising there but after it's very long.
My maternal grandmother was born in 1913 and his father was born in 1870, his mother was born in 1876....
My maternal grandmother had two brothers, one born in 1896 and another born in 1899. ...
My grand uncle born in 1899 was mobilized in french army in 1918 for the last campaign of the Great War.
It's probably very rare for a guy of my generation because many of of my countrymen have great great grandparents who were soldiers in that period.

I was born in 1976 (I am the youngest sibling), my elder sister was born in 1967, the first new member of the next generation of gixajo´s family was born in January 2000 (She is 23 tomorrow).

    - My father was born in 1939 (he is the elder sibling, his younger sister was born in 1955), paternal grandparents both in 1914.

    - My mother was born in 1943 (her elder sister is still alive and is 94 years old so she was born in 1928), maternal grandparents in 1903 and 1904.

I can trace just one generation more in my paternal line with accuracy (and one more with some lack of data), and in my maternal line I can go back in my grandparent paternal line till 1578 (and knowing the names and surnames and place of birth but not birth dates of the previous generation from mids 1500s), and with some lateral branchs till 1490s with name, surnames, places of birth and date of birth.

Avg generation is 29.5, people tended to marry youngish and have lots of kids up to their 40s even to this day: I'm the eldest of 7 and my moms' sister had 9. Parents were married at 22. Overall the avg age of marriage in my family is 20 and 25 for women and men respectively. This reflects historical trends in my state of men marrying significantly younger women ( my 4G grandmother on maternal line was 14 ).

I've a long paper trail in all directions with very varying generation lengths so it seems pointless to determine a number for all if that is not compared to a respective average of others that also goes over centuries.

The last few generations in my family are somewhat longer than average (40 years ish), but further back 30 years or so on average.
