The surname Cortez does exist. It exist alot among new worlders
Its more than likely the same name origin, just a different spelling.

Cortes is probably old spanish or portuguese variant
    Cortez is spanish variant.
    A portugues wouldn't put a Z they would put a S
Just like they do with certain names like Gonçalves
    In spanish its gonzalez
    Or Rodriguez in spanish
    But Rodrigues in portuguese.
But in old spanish because the writing of old spanish was closer to galician and portuguese it was probably written as Rodrigues.

According to oral family tradition E-FT155550 comes from a deserter of Napoleon's troops (1808-1813) who stayed in Spain and changed his surname.

I only know this case, and it was just his artistic name since he was Jewish https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricardo_Cortez

New Worlders are so retard that they achieved to change the original surname Cortés to Cortez. That is why the famous conquistador Hernán Cortés is called Cortez in Latam and USA

Blasphemy!!!!! First, Cortés is as Spanish as could get, second, Cortés does not exist in Portugal, and third, all these Portuguese surnames ended in -es come from the Spanish version -ez

No idea, I never met or knew someone with that name. I mean in Spain because I know about Carlota Casiragi, a member of the Monaco Royal House I think.

Or maybe because old spanish changed and new worlders changed the name to the new standard.

You ever seen how they write in old spanish. In very old spanish scripts some of the letters dont even represent the same sounds. Of how it would be read today.

Many instances gonzalez in spanish is spelled gonzales not gonzalez.
    Bermudez was spelled bermudes
Enrique was spelled henrique and vice versa
Martinez was spelled as Martines and shortened to as de Martin sonetimes.

    Muy as muey
    Ruiz as Ruys

    Reina was spelled Reyna
    Julio was abbreviated J^io
    Juan was abreviated J^n
Pedro was abrevated P^dro I believe sometimes
    Lopez as lopes
    Fernandez as fernandes
    Gomez as gomes
Sanchez as sanches to a lesser degree
    Diaz as dias

    Rameriz as ramires
Ortiz as ortis although this was less common
    Dominguez as domingues
    Pereira as Pereyra
    Alonso as Alonzo
    Chavez as chaves
    Fuentez as Fuentes
    Espinosa as Espinoza

    Maria abreviated as M^ria

Please dont ramble about how its "retarded" when you clearly dont know anything or understand or ever seen old spanish scripts and records to know that they are very different from todays spanish. Including how names were interpreted or translated in different variations.

The name rodriguez is spelled rodrigues in old spanish rocords many times. Not as rodriguez only.
Jimenez was spelled Ximenez and vise versa.

20 Nombres para bebes de origen Íbero

The Iberian language was a paleohispanic language spoken in the Iberian Peninsula (in the area of the Mediterranean coast) before the arrival of the Roman Empire. It is a language isolate whose origin is not very clear. The Iberian disappeared with the conquest of Hispania by the Romans, therefore, the few Iberian names that are preserved have done so through stories, inscriptions, tombs ... And they are names of Iberian origin of characters of the time, whose meanings, for the most part, have been lost.
