German language uses a lot of Latin words like most European languages. Also there are grammatic similarities because both are Indo-European languages. Besides that I can't say which Romance language is closest to German. My guess would be French. But i don't know for sure.

I heard that this was the worst war in the history of Germany, I think that Germany lost more people in that war than in the WW.

Can you understand some French words?
The Swiss German is the same as in Germany?

I speak French, but if I couldn't I still would understand a lot of French words. But that probably goes for all Romance languages. And probably all indo-european languages.

Swiss German is the same as German basically but the dialect is very heavy it's hard to follow. Sometimes when I listen to Swiss radio I'm shocked how little I actually understand. But if the dialect is not too heavy I can understand everything because it's the same as German just with a different accent.
