Default Principal Apologizes After Students Recite the Pledge in Spanish

Principal Apologizes After Students Recite the Pledge in Spanish
    27 Nov 2018

A Virginia high school principal apologized after a plan to have students recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish was poorly received.

The principal at Westfield High School in Chantilly, Virginia, made the apology after receiving pushback from upset parents who discovered their children had been asked to recite the pledge in Spanish.

The school administrator initially planned for native speakers of foreign languages—such as French or German—to lead the student body in the recitation of the pledge in other languages.

“A school administrator suggested students lead the pledge in Spanish to promote engagement and inclusion,” Fairfax County Public Schools told Fox 5 DC. “Administrators believed this was an opportunity for other voices and languages to be heard and recognize the school diversity.”

The school district said the initiative was supposed to last for two days before the Thanksgiving holiday, but some parents are suggesting there was more to the story.

“They had a native Spanish speaker read it Tuesday. End of the school day Tuesday afternoon, the principal comes on and said, ‘He was sorry.’ He was sorry and didn’t want it to be offensive,” said parent Stephanie Somers, whose son is a senior at the high school.

Other high schools implementing similar initiatives to recite the pledge in foreign languages have had to issue apologies to parents.

In 2015, one upstate New York public school issued an apology for asking its students to recite the pledge in Arabic after Jewish families and families who lost loved ones in the Afghanistan war complained.

At least it’s a beautiful language, easy to learn and quite similar to English.

Wanna bet that it isn't? English is too embedded - law, education, government, economically, commerce, business, international affairs, etc. in just about every way.

The rise in Spanish speakers is due to immigrants from Spanish speaking countries, but the children of newcomers are usually bilingual, and their grandchildren tend to be monolingual English speakers. In other words, Spanish comes here to die.

    It is entirely avoidable.

Well, that's just my opinion for what it's worth, not that I have a nothing against Spanish as a language.

With me being a Civil War Buff, nearly the first thing I noticed is that Westfield High School is located in Chantilly, Virginia, because there was a Civil War Battle there, in 1862. But, it wouldn't be surprising to find out that most of the students there don't even know that there was a battle fought in their own home town. The American Civil War is a part of American Heritage, yet too few people appreciate its importance.

The Battle of Chantilly, in Fairfax County, Virginia, on September 1st, 1862, halted a Confederate advance against Washington, D.C., and it stalemated Stonewall Jackson's approach upon the Capital. It came shortly after Robert E Lee's Victory at the Battle of Second Bull Run, and insured a safe retreat for Pope's army.

The battle involved Stonewall Jackson's Corp of roughly 20,000 Confederates, against about 6,000 Union troops whom conducted a rearguard action. Union casualties amounted to about 1,300 while Confederate casualties amounted to about 800. A violent thunderstorm soaked the battlefield in rainwater during the Battle of Chantilly.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Chantilly
A severe thunderstorm erupted about this time, resulting in limited visibility and an increased dependence on the bayonet, as the rain soaked the ammunition of the infantry and made it useless.

Dutch should have been more influential, but the Vanderbildts all speak English now there.

This. And Asians and others who come here don't learn Spanish. Spanish will not be the language of the US outside of Miami.
