You don't need to know the language to read the holy scripts. You just need to know the Arabic script. It will sound like gibberish when you start reading the Qur'an, but reading it is still required. It would be like Christians learning the Greek script (the original New Testament was written in Greek) but speaking 0 Greek and reading the Bible in the Greek script. The reason given for this is that translating it will corrupt the purity of the message since a perfect translation isn't possible, so you just have to learn the Arabic script and read it in Arabic. If that sounds weird, then consider that they have to memorize all of
this in Arabic and recite those in prayer when they pray 5x a day.
