Default Do you think we can undo the damage done to the environment?

    Discuss.

Evidence shows that humans have caused significant pollution to the planet and have disrupted many formerly functional ecosystems.

Is it too late to undo the damage?

This is one of those things that I could not care less about if my life depended on it. But since you bring it up, my answer would be yes. Environmental activists tend to exaggerate things. That is how they make a living and keep the attention of the ignorant masses (exhibit A- Al Gore) The situation is not great, but certainly far from catastrophic as they would have us believe. In other words, if we all do very little things in a consistent manner we should be fine for a long time.

What damage? If you think for an instant that life is going to end and the Earth is going to stop turning because of a puny species of apelings turned oil into flimsy bags to store garbage, you invest far too much faith in our ability and intelligence as a species. This planet is over over four billion years old. That's 4,000,000,000 years. Modern humans have been around between 50,000 and 200,000 years, and engaged in heavy industry for just over 200. How arrogant can you possibly be to think that we could "damage" this planet - let alone permanently damage it.

The sin of hubris has never been greater than since the dawn of the Enlightenment: first, there was nothing we couldn't create. Now, there's nothing we can't destroy. Eventually we're going to have to learn our place again, as subjects, not rulers, of The Divine and Its Universe.

I don't believe in global warming but I have seen some serious cases of pollution and I believe that we as an modern industrial society should change our ways. Real soon,, real quick. And I don't buy the standard neo-liberal story that "you set rules and the factories leave for China". That is Libertarian/ big business scaremongering

Wake up and smell the coffee.

No. We must abandon the earth and live in space stations and eventually move on to colonising Mars. I'm currently collecting donations to begin work on such space stations.

Please contact me to find out about donating to the cause.

No, I dont think that is ever possible. We have done already too much and we don't seem like going to stop.

God has placed you, as his creation, on his planet he has created for you and all mankind. And now you want to abandon the place he has created for you? Heresy! Excommunication! Male witch! Burn!

PP, you should have included an "it's a hoax " option. The question the way you asked it is very loaded

I believe that if the Earth was able to recover from the cataclysms that predate us, it will be able to recover again until the final death blow is struck by some galactic event or if we blow ourselves up and the Earth with it.
