Struggles within Ethnically Mixed Relationships

This thread was inspired by a few private conversations I had with Mortimer.
We both agreed this might be a worthy topic for discussion on TA. So this can be considered a joint thread idea. But I decided to start it

The premise behind this thread is that in any given romantic relationship and/ or marriage, there are often conflicts within them. That is a given. But we have not come across a thread specifically dealing with the topic of how racial or ethnic differences within that relationship might impact on that.

Below are some very loose examples of what I am talking about; more questions can be added/addressed:

Have any TA members experienced one or more of the following:

1.) Racial or Ethnic differences as a source of tension.

2.) Does one of the two parties ever use their ethnicity as means of 'superiority' over their partners.

3.) Are ethnic slurs ever used towards one another during a heated argument.

4.) Have you or your partner ever felt undeserving of the other because one might be viewed as a minority--or as an ethnicity of 'shame', so to speak; e.g. one is an 'Anglo-Saxon' white, while the other is mixed of some sort.


Please share how you or your partner deals with these issues, should they ever come up in the relationship.

True. But we both recognize these things can come into play at times, and it's certainly worth putting this thread up to see if other TA members have had these conflicts and how they choose to deal with them.

Only thing I can think of is when we were younger (in highschool) my parents were very strict and protective Europeans and didn't allow me to do much or go anywhere, in contrast to her very open parents. It caused some tension but this could also be brushed off as nothing at all. I had to think hard to even remember this, lol

Not being able to clearly pronounce Greek food is the deal breaker for me.

I was in a relationship with an American of Sicilian descent. Something that bothered me was that I learned a lot about Sicilian culture, food, and people to know more about their culture, but they didn't take the time to learn about my culture at all, and often overlooked it. They were instead only oddly focused on specific places such as Lebanon, Ireland, and Greece. Their excuse for focusing on Ireland was that their friends are of Irish descent and significant to them. It made me feel like I wasnt significant enough for them to want to learn about my culture. I tried sharing food, music, etc, but no reciprocation was given.

I never really faced the other issues. No racial slurs were ever hollered at each other. The big issue was misunderstanding and lack of appreciation of my culture.

I forgot to add, my ex seemed to use his heritage to feel superior to other Americans. That was also obnoxious. He would constantly brag about the different ethnicities he gets mistaken for and talk about how much more "greek" he is than modern Greeks.
