Default Which European languages do you think will die off in the next century?

Whether due to the universality of English, the mass media, immigration, demographics or anything else.

I highly doubt that any European language will die out, unless the speakers of that language don't have a nation for themselves and are a minority group like the Basque or Saami.

The Albanians, these tigers of mountain wars ... have as their religion rebellion. Even their worst warrior is one of the strongest and bravest on the battle-field, just as if he was a knight on the legendary horse. But he has no horse, nor proper weapons for battle. Instead of the horse, he has a lance which strikes as lightning, he has spears who's points are full of posion as the sting of hornets, he has also a wooden bow with some arrows. Furthermore, he is stronger than iron ...

Dialects are not the same thing as actual languages as such though. Anyway, imo the Celtic, North Germanic, Finno-Ugric and Baltic languages are most vulnerable.

Italian dialects are actually seperate languages, as seperate as Portuguese and Spanish, with each having its own literature.

Dutch will survive, despite many of its speakers putting English on a pedestal. I can see Frisian die out and dialects getting leveled. West Flemish and Nedersaksisch probably still around, but more of accents of Standard Dutch.

The Lawspeaker posted an article a few weeks ago saying how many Dutch universities, even at undergraduate level, increasingly teach through the medium of English rather than Dutch.

Yeah, it's sickening and unnecessary, IMO. Doesn't make the university more worldly by that much after all. Keep in mind, though, that back in the 19th century they taught in Latin there, yet society remained Dutch-speaking too.

Some of the greatest Dutch scholars were taught in Dutch at university, though. Vanderwaals, Lorentz, Zeeman.
