I have an old portable record player from the 1960's. It's a suitcase model and a bit heavy because it has tubes. Although it makes a slight hum, it still has decent sound quality and better than anything in the portable market today. The record players they have out now are just awful. The sound quality is terrible. I got a Crosely model to try and transfer vinyl to my computer. It sounded like a tin can. If someone is new to vinyl, it may even ruin the experience for them. I wonder if quality is just going downhill . Maybe the older players sound better because they are made of different material? Of course portables are not going to be as good as HQ stereo systems, but they just don't make 'em like they used to. My General Electric record player is still going and it's almost 60 years old.
