They're called black because they're "blackheads" compared to Russian. Funnily enough, your average Ruski couldnt differentiate the average Chechen from an Armenian or Georgian. We are all "black" for them.

North Caucasians are usually on pair with Italians in terms of average pigmentation. So, they are usually lighter pigmented than Greeks, Spaniards and Portuguese.
