I remember seeing a news article that received a lot of public attention when a female copper in the London Metropolitan Police refused to shake hands with the then head of the Met. police (Sir Ian Blair,) during a police line-up. All the other police in the line shook his hand - except for her - as she refused to integrate.

The reason being was because she was a muslim - and hence forbidden to touch the hands of men of whom she's not married to.

Members of the public asked how is she going to nick anyone and put cuffs on criminal suspects if she can't touch people?!

The coppers have to grab peoples wrists when they're under arrest, ('nicked!'

I don't think you know much about the Dutch police then. Back in those day, they may have looked like a bunch of nerds but they used to beat the shit out of you. Quite a number of left-wing agitators or squatters used to end up in a hospital. Or, in the case of a couple, dead.

Same goes for unruly hooligans: the police didn't have the legal framework to detain them for so long so what they did was to turn off all the electricity (so the lights were switched off in a holding cell), then go in, beat the shit out of them (as in breaking batons sort of thing), get out quickly, turn on the light and release the "customers" with a "wow.. gentlemen.. what happened ? Did you fight among yourselves ?" The BBC really got the 1980s Dutch police wrong. Growing up, I learned one thing: don't. (under any circumstance). fuck. with. the. police. Ever.
