It's a long history and rivalry in every sense, religious, cultural etc.. since... thousands of years back.

That rivalry doesn't exist anymore cause Mediteranean Empires do not exist anymore but still Germans find it unusual when focus on discussions is about Balkans, Anatolia, Greece cause they don't find themselves in those topics.
