I'd like to know who exactly was deported in the other newly annexed territories of the USSR. Could anyone provide some data?

    chto za slovo - 'woodwards'?!?
Found in a dictionary while trying to translate "pracownicy służby leśnej" ("workers of forest service"?). It didn't sound too good to me either, but I didn't found anything better. Would "rangers" sound okay?

Thanks for the help with my English.

'Forester' is an oldish word for a man who looks after forests. 'Forestry workers' is more modern sounding, perhaps.

I see why Polish osadniki and 'kulaks' were deported, but why forestry workers?! Just for their expertise to be used in logging camps!? Or is there a sociological aspect to forestry in Belarus at that date which I'm missing?

Beria's argumentation was that they had received military training and were preparing hostilities against the USSR.

It looks like the forestry workers were a militarized organisation and that made them as undesirable as policemen and gendarmes were.

Many (most?) of deportees were Poles, by the way; in II Rzecz Pospolita Belarusians were a minority that was not to be trusted, thus Belarusian policemen or Belarusian forestry workers were difficult to find - that kind of job was reserved for Poles.
