"Turkey is secular, and will remain secular" is a popular patriotic Kemalist slogan chanted in various gatherings, such as stadiums, arenas, rallies, protests, and any kind of meetings.

"Türkiye laiktir, laik kalacak". "Laïque" is the original French word for secularism. Laicism was one of the prominent principles that had been brought up by the French Revolution which greatly influenced the founding characteristics of the Turkish Republic. Laicism is the backbone of liberty and equality.

Maybe from an Islamic POV. My cousin is married to a turk, when he left Turkey he used to think the same but after living here for almost 5 years he has told me he is really surprised about the almost non-existent role of religion here.

Perhaps you are right. I think Turkey is still Islamic despite being secular, despite what some try to say. However Turkey is still one of the most secular nations in the region. Tunisia is by far more secular due to prolonged European contact especially French and Italian. In Turkey especially in the rural areas religion still plays an important role indeed. The areas that are secular in Turkey are more so Istanbul, Izimir, Antalya, Ankara, but the rest is more or less a mix of religious and secularism. I believe the government is still secular despite it has some Islamist/religious views, and they are confined to an extent, well unless Erdogan or someone breaches these laws. Many Turks are also religious depending on their regional background and many are a well not religious at all, again depending. The areas near Europe are more European culturally, than the areas near the Caucasus and Mideast. After all it large nation.
