Similarities Between Dutch and Indonesian

In this video, we compare some of the similarities between Dutch (Nederlands) and Indonesian (bahasa Indonesia), with Jelmer, a Dutch speaker from the Netherlands, and Firman, an Indonesian speaker from Indonesia. The Indonesian language has been influenced by many other languages, and Dutch has been one of the major languages to influence bahasa Indonesia. It is estimated that the number of Dutch words in the Indonesian language are far more than the ones from the other languages which have impacted Indonesian such as English, Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, Sanskrit, Tamil, Hindi, and Persian. It also holds official status in Suriname, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. It is important to note that the Afrikaans language, the Cape Dutch dialects of Southern Africa, is a mutually intelligible daughter language spoken by a significant number of people in South Africa and Namibia. Indonesian is a standardized register of Malay and the official language of Indonesia. Indonesia is a multi-lingual country and most Indonesians speak another language, however, the Indonesian language is used as a lingua franca. Indonesian is also recognized as minority language in East Timor.

I guessed 'schep', because we say 'schup' or 'schop' and I'm sure many Dutch colonials also said 'schop'.
