Default Just purchased a FTDNA Y dna test

Finally did it. It was a tough decision, but I went for Y67 for now. I will probably upgrade to big Y in the summer when I have more money. Since it's overseas shipping I likely won't receive my kit till the 2nd week of January. I'm going to guess I probably won't get my results to late Feb or March.

It's a good thing that we have a FTDNA lab here in Dubai, lol.

Wow, that's pretty cool. I'm guessing I'll end up having mind sent back to the US. Shipping 23andme back to USA from Britain was an absolute nightmare. I ordered my 23andme kit this time last year, the kit didn't get back to the 23andme Labs till Feb as bad weather hit my shipping route.

I am a bit of an idiot with my purchases, I bought the Y67 then upgraded to Y111.

Then, my brother gifted me the Big-Y since he said it was on offer and it was related to him, as well, lol.

    Talking about buyer's remorse.

I'd go for something higher if you've got the money. I'm going for Y-67 now so my spit file is on record when I go for big Y in the summer.

Depends mostly on your goals and your background. I think that doing at least Y-37 or Y-67 is absolutely necessary when:
1)you belong to a well covered haplogroup or
2)you come from a relatively well DNA-testing covered country.

Of course when you do the test for the first time, you will not know the first for sure. You may start with whatever option and upgrade but IMHO Y-37 is reasonable.

It may not be so beneficial when you belong to a truly rare branch or your branch is so young, that everyone matches at Y-111 and Y-STR testing resolves nothing (issue specific mostly for Jews but applies to some extent to other branches as well like R1b-M222, R1a-YP1337 etc.).

In any case - one cannot really know whether by doing only Y12 he is missing something or not.

I didn't miss a thing myself. No matches on Y-37 and above. I've done Big Y and Y-67 but so far I have no Y-STR match above Y-25. That is likely going to change in the future but I also realise weaknesses of Y-STRs. That's why SNP testing is a necessary step.

What's quite funny, my closest Big Y match is a guy who isn't even visible on my Y-12 list. Guy who is visible on my Y-STR matches list is a more distant match.
Furthermore, list is dominated by Scandinavians who belong to totally different branch deep under Norse Z284

But that's just my case. Some people are much more lucky in that aspect than I am.
