Dogs and cats have two different kinds of intelligence and different ways to show their feelings. While dogs are expansive cats tend to be more introverted and mysterious, but they are well able to show how much they love their owner. Dogs are more domesticated while cats retain all their wild instincts; put a cat in a forest and he's able to hunt and survive, while a dog would starve to death.

Think that in ancient Egypt cats were considered divine beings, they were the guardians of the house and of the granaries. They were the living image of the goddess Bastet, and they were even mummified when they died, to be venerated as gods. In ancient Egypt if someone killed a cat he was condemned to death for blasphemy.

They often have toxoplasma gondii a parasite that infests the brain and over time changes the structure of synapses in the brain and the way how they react to certain neurotransmitters. They get it by eating the uncooked meat of their prey (mouses, rats).

Dogs were bred for hunting, guarding, pack carrying, herding, companionship, pest control, and meat. Cats were bred for pest control and companionship, some early large ones for guarding. Dogs might have a longer history with Europeans.
