Default Do you consider "gringo" to be a racial epithet?

Could it not even be said to be the obverse of "spic"? Let us discuss.

It's as much an insult as "cracker". It is a meaningless insult.

no. it depends on the context. it just means white american. my father once referred to himself as a gringo while relating a tale in which he was in a foreign country. my mother calls my daughter her little gringa.

my parents never cuss or call anyone names. if it were an insult, they wouldn’t use it

Some people casually called me a gringo when they discovered I was from Sweden.

This is my view also. It depends on the context. It can be used as an insult if that is the intention, but for me it carries no weight. A person would have a hard time offending me with that word, it would possibly annoy me is if they were trying to offend me with it, though (it is the intent to offend, not the word itself). Nobody has ever used that word against me in anger, might actually be funny if they did, now that I think about it more.

Precisely, and likewise with 'gori' in South Asia.
