Kalendae? It means Calendar. Stems from that latin word. It doesn't mean carols in Latin.
Koliadi doesn't either mean carols in Slavic though.

Koleda does. It's the same word basically. From old church Slavonic and ultimately Latin kalendae according to this.

Yes, but I was referring to the Slavic pagan Koliadi.

Since he's claiming kalendae can't mean "carol" due it meaning calendar in Latin, I was using the same logic that Koliadi can't either mean "carol" cause the Slavic pagan term didn't mean that.

Both possibilities should be considered but meanings slightly change over time so that was my point with that post.

Anyways, the fact the Greek kalanti is also said to come from the Latin kalendae and has the same meaning as the Slavic koleda means that the ultimate roots of the word are likely Latin.

And the fire practice is likely of Thracian or Paeonian or Greek Macedonian origin. Weird the practice doesn't have its own distinctive name separate from koleda.

My point is that there is no proof or even strong evidence that koliadi is pagan Slavic. Most likely a modified version of koleda. As for the rest you are probably right.
