This happens even today. Here in Spain we call Moro (Moor) to any Muslim (except blacks. They are called just blacks) or brown person from Africa and Asia. I remember a coworker of mine calling Moor to Sadam Hussein when the Gulf War in 2000s and Americans killed him. "They have killed the Moor", he said...

Albanians, Bosniaks, Pakis, Irakis, Iranis, Lebaneses, Turks, etc, all of them are called Moors here.
Of course North Africans are the most authentic and real Moors, and of course they are the first to be called so.

Moriscos were the Muslims that lived in Spain after the Reconquista, until the moment of their expulsion. I mean, Morisco is how Spaniards called them.
Nobody uses that term nowadays, and I bet 99% of Spaniards ignore the existence of that word.

Interesting. That term was used in Cuba before the revolution to describe the small Arab Muslim population. It came up when talking about her unusually high West Asian component. She claimed that there was no way it came from Muslims because "they were called Moriscos and we all knew who they were."

They were the Moors that converted to Christianity instead of choosing to go to Africa. A number of them were closet Muslims though.

Moriscos (Spanish: [moˈɾiskos], Catalan: [muˈɾiskus]; Portuguese: mouriscos [mo(w)ˈɾiʃkuʃ]; meaning "Moorish") were former Muslims and their descendants who were pressured heavily by the Catholic church and the Spanish Crown under the threat of death to convert to Christianity after Spain outlawed the open practice of Islam by its sizeable Muslim population (termed mudéjar) in the early 16th century.[1]

The Ottoman Empire/Morocco stuff is much later and the definition probably changed then.

How can we talk about expulsion of moriscos during reconquista if they were christian converts living in iberia?
