Default Outlaw King: What Language Did Robert the Bruce Speak?

The new Netflix Movie Outlaw King tells the story of Robert the Bruce, the warrior king of Scotland who drove out the English and ensured the nation's continued freedom for some 400 years to come. In this one I'd like to look at which languages were spoken in Medieval Scotland, and which, if any, of these Robert the Bruce would have spoken in the late 13th, early 14th Century.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Probably would have spoken some Anglo-Norman dialect, probably would have spoken Gaelic of some sort. He was known to have education in French and Latin from his time in school and education in scripture, which arguably would have been the more valuable language because all the important tests were written in Latin.

His mother was the Gaelic countess of Carrick so I know he was definitely fluent in that language.

The Bruces also held extensive land in England so I would imagine that he was also fluent in English.

And being of Norman decent on his father's side, and given the prestige of the French language at that time, it's safe to assume he was fluent in that too

Somewhat off topic but that movie was pretty disappointing. The characters were so bland and undeveloped you could barely remember who was who.

I agree, Chris Pine managed to make Robert the Bruce dull as dishwater.

And how can you have a film about the Bruce with no battle of Bannockburn.

    The film was shite.

Also his second wife wasn't English. She was Elizabeth De Burgh daughter of the Earl of Ulster and Connacht.
