Art connoisseurs watched in horror as an expensive piece of art by the English graffiti artist 'Banksy' was shredded before their eyes - just after someone had purchased the painting at an auction for a record $1.4 million.

The picture slipped out of its frame and fell onto the floor in shreds.

The anonymous artist (who goes by the name of 'Banksy') claimed to be behind the stunt.

He said he built the shredder into the painting's frame.

It was like he was sending a silent message to people... that art today is junk.

I basically agree with above comments, and I agree that much of this commercialized modern art can't hold a candle up to the artistic temperament that predates the 20th Century; despite that, I do see some redeeming merit, because it brings forth some philosophical or cultural ideas that can give us a new angle about ourselves.

As I said, I frankly don't like it, and often times it's a way to commercialize and market the maker of much of our contemporary art. My brother was an artist and sculpture, and his life was the opposite of these kind of modern artists whom have created so many pop art marketing schemes. He lived a life like that of Van Gogh.

I would place my favorite poet, Paul Verlaine, in the same category as your brother and Van Gogh, as concerns what you have alluded to.

Thanks for mentioning him: I haven't seen Paul Verlaine's work, neither did I know about him, but I'll take a look at his life and work today.

    Here is some interesting context:

Verlaine was a man who throughout his life oscillated between two poles: at one pole, debauchery, drunkenness, licentiousness, violence, a dangerous sort of whimsy, caprice, turbulence after turbulence. Indeed, early on in his career he was put on the Vatican's Black List on account of the publishing of a poetical work centred on homoeroticism and transgression.

And yet, later on in his life, after having been imprisoned for homosexuality and shooting a pistol at his lover (Rimbaud) due to an argument over a fish the former had procured at market, and the latter had apparently regarded with disdain.. Verlaine wrote Sagesse, or so it is said, in a Belgian prison cell..

Today, Sagesse is considered by many Catholic commentators as a masterwork of Catholic literature..

And to describe the other pole: gentleness, contemplativeness, a yearning for the simple and the pastoral, a yearning to love and be loved, and an almost childlike innocence..
