Sounds pretty tricky, but I will try it.

And to be clear:

For measuring width I leaned over while sitting at a table, put my face on the table, and brought the spines of the book together until they touched the sides of my head. I measured that distance.

For length (depth), I stood in a corner, back of my head against the wall, held the spine of a book across my forhead and positioned it so it touched the adjacent wall. I marked that spot with a pencil.

Okay, all this is very hard to explain with words, a video demo would work better. Bottom line, I think my method was reliable and when I tested it, I got the same result everytime. You can do it too! Good luck
