Western powers did not create the great Bulgaria of the 9th century. It is this idea which has put them at odds with the Serbs. Serbia does not have territorial aspirations towards Greece, because the Bulgarians were in between them.
There was a Vatican, Rome back in the day! The Slavic component of Bulgars are of Serbian origin who were ruled by an over jealous Turkic ruling minority, Bulgars! In the beginning there was major animosity between the majority Slavo-Serbs and this Bulgar-Turk minority.......to cut it really short......Boris realised they were going to end up losing to their subjects so he christened himself and banned the use of his Turk language and simply named his nation as Bulgaria.
Look, this may have been during the 9th century as Bulgaria was the sandwich, but all Slavs derive from the Rascians (Serb/Thracians), why is there even to this day a town in central Bulgaria known as Srbenica, eventhou like Croats had renamed many towns of towns called Serb-whatever.
How are the South Slavs one people? Would you accept a Bulgarian president and the Bulgarian version of history to be educated in Serbian classrooms? Can all old kingdoms be ignored sothat one state of South Slavs will be created? Sure, the great powers are not going to allow that, but is there enough will to initiate such a union among South Slavs? Has there ever been? I don't think so.
Prior to 681AD the Slavo-Serbs of Modern Bulgaria and Serbs elsewhere were one. Your right, the great powers will never allow it, they want rivalry and distaste between all Slav groups. The Vatican, the old hidden Roman Empire, sees Slavs and partly Orthodoxy as a thorn in their eyes.......you know about the Halocaust in Croatia? This has happened recently and during the time of Rome.
