Default Is the black population of Latin America underestimated?

By this I mean, do far more Latin Americans fit in the American definition of "black" than what is seen in census and demographic data? I suspect yes.

No way are 75% of Puerto Ricans passable in Spain despite being considered "white." Many of those "whites" would look like light skinned blacks to Americans. I also believe many more Cubans are black than what is on the census, considering far more white Cubans emigrate abroad than do the black Cubans.

I also suspect black Colombians, Hondurans, and Panamanians are undercounted.

When I saw photos of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, almost everyone looked significantly mixed with African. I do not believe PR is 75% white, not for one second. I think most of the people who DNA test who are Puerto Rican American are on the whiter end of the spectrum, and most of the strongly African descendants were unable to emigrate.

Underestimated in EVERY single country in Latin America. Blacks are extremely unwanted by non-Blacks in Latin America and therefore they under-count the number of Blacks and underestimate the presence of African genetics in their populations.

The definition of “whiteness” varies from country to country. In most Latin American countries, except perhaps those with large European populations in the southern cone (Argentina, Uruguay and Southern Brazil), lighter-than-the-average skin is considered white, while facial traits are not taken into account.

That said, I do think that some Latin American ethnic groups are understimated IN THE US, because some Latam populations are overrepresented in the country (Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Central Americans). Thus, some populations wouldn’t fit in the American sterotype of “Latino”, like a black coastal Colombian or a German-Brazilian.

I don't think so. You may be right if you talk about black passing mixed persons but if you talk about pure blacks, then it is surely overrated. Pure blacks are not common in most of South America

I just watched a documentary on Black people in Latin America, it seems greatly encouraged for people to identify as something other than Black even if they are mostly of African ancestry. It seems at least true in some Latin American countries with bigger Black populations.

In Brazil, SSA is less than stipulated, the Amerindian is underestimated. Amerindian appeared "mysteriously".

Hummm... if you see brazilian samples of different studies, you will see that in the same level to Uruguay, Cuba, PR and DR, Brazil has the lower amerind %.
Which is underestimated in Brazil and I don't know why is the white contribution...
