That has also become my position. I treat foreign women (and, of course, particularly my fiancee) with égards, Dutch women receive the "we're equal so help yourself" treatment. But in those days it was applied equally throughout society: a wealthy man wouldn't have dreamed of treating a poor woman with contempt (at least not in public) as it would reflect poorly upon his station, Mary.
Wake up and smell the coffee.

Mary: not everybody just comes swimming out of Eastern Europe or the Middle East. In parts of Europe, this chivalry was normal unless than 10 years ago. I still grew up with it. You held the door open, you took your hat/cap off, you get up when a woman enters the room, you give them your hand in assistance when they have to climb aboard the train, you help them get seated etc. etc.
Wake up and smell the coffee.

I could not agree more, chilvary is dead now, especially in Europe or in the western world in general. Feminism, gender equality, loss of traditional values etc... are all responsable of that.
It still exists in few countries or regions though like South America, Middle East, some countries in East Asia I think etc... Chilvalry does not equal respect always though, it's just a cultural compulsory for men in some societies if they want to be in the "norms".
I re-discovered it recently in my trips in Middle East. It's very chocking when you are not used to it, I have to say. Especially Levantine men (Lebanese ranked n#1)., believe it or not, they are real gentlemen (in the beginning at least lol). They are more traditional and conservatives, it helps.
What a great feeling! When you have men like that, it's very difficult to even consider "other men".

The low divorce figures of WM-BF are a sign of mutual appreciation while the opposite example is an indication that the marriage was out fantasy and this frenzy is just a mode, generally not viable on the long term because the partner is seen as an exotic sex toy to fulfill the other's ego and radicality vis-à-vis his social group, a disastrous revenge action against societal norms leading to a generalized neurosis.
The American case is the exacerbation of Europe, it is Europe's radical future.
