They were all Catholics before Henry VIII. A lot of things are used to divide people. I would hope people would be more knowledgeable these days about their history.

Clustering doesn't necessarily mean you're close in terms of genetic composition, that's just coincidence based off genetic averages. What matters is IBD sharing; Scots have a lot more Germanic than you nationalists will ever admit and aren't that different to England, aside from east Anglia, which is vastly different to the rest of England.

I think English are distant to Ireland when compared, England and Irelands similarity on PCA charts is more of just a coincidence based on genetic averages; I don't think there's a lot of cross over in reality. Politics and anglo/celtic identity aside, England/Scotland are closer to each other than they are anyone else genetically.

I'm interested in what you are basing that on. There was obviously a lot of interaction between Ireland and Britain. They also share similar ancestry through the Bell Beakers who populated both Ireland and Britain. Then there was a lot of movement back and forth since that time re Plantations in Ireland and Irish immigration to the UK. They all cluster very close together and would share a lot of IBD which is what the graphic I posted showed. It would be very odd if they didn't have a lot of shared ancestry. Most English people have some recent Irish ancestry as well.

Even looking at ydna something as iconically Irish as M222 which is my paternal line and is actually older in Scotland and Northern England than Ireland. They think it only came to Ireland about 1,500 years ago.

According to this study here, Scots average at around 26.34% Germanic. Of course knuckle dragging nationalists will have us believe that Scots were helpless natives undertaken by the evil English invaders.

That's not based on a study but only Ancestry's breakdown. They are using the old Great Britain category to signify Anglo-Saxon and the Ireland, Scotland and Wales category to signify Celtic. Not accurate at all. The People of the British Isles study is a scientific study from Oxford University and is more accurate in looking at admixture. Ancestry is just based on modern day populations and the Great Britain category is just based on people today like all their categories.
