In the 21st Century, The South is largely Republican and the North is largely Democrat. In the 19th Century through the 1960's, it was the complete opposite. In the South, you didn't dare vote Republican. It was the party of Lincoln. Look at the elections from the 19th Century up til Nixon . All the Southern states voted Democrat and the Yankees all voted Republican. Are people believing that everyone in the North moved to the South to make it Republican or vice versa? We know that can't be.
In general, the Southern states are far more conservative than the New England states and Northeast. The South votes largely Republican, (even though some of the South Atlantic states have shifted in recent years.) The South is by far more conservative than the North, and always has been. Years ago, it voted largely Democrat. It was even more conservative then.
We know that the parties have platforms, but the parties can't exist without people who make up those platforms. The Democrats and Republicans from the 19th Century are dead. Obviously, they don't vote in our elections today.....
Why do some Republicans insist that the parties never changed? The people make up the party. Without the people, there is no party. Obviously, the 19th Century Democrats were not liberals. The Republicans seemed to fit more the liberalism of the time. The Northern states were morel liberal than the Old South. I am a Republican and I know that my grandparents who voted Democrat were very conservative. The Democrat party must have changed within itself and same for the Republicans.
