I am not sure what his commanding officer (a captain or lieutenant ? it didn't look like some NCO to me) said but was he really like this ?

You mean the anti-authority and anti-discpline attitude? Yes, it was really so. He called everyone by first name, even battallion commander, and he absolutely refused to make salute. They looked it by because he was really exceptional soldier. Only thing, they denied him biggest military medals because of his attitude.
