There are regional lenguages that are important too due to the lack of english penetration on its bastions: spanish, russian, arabic and chinese mandarin. The single one that grows outside and competes a bit against english is spanish (mainly in USA, the latin Europe and Brazil) [Despite portuguese and spanish could be consideared a macro-lenguage, nuch more similar than chinese, german or arabic dialects that are consideared the same lenguage]

Paradoxically the lenguage most important one century ago, french, has been clearly defeated in importance and number of students everywhere first by english and then by spanish.

English is important due to USA and the Commonwealth more than UK.

Same happens with Spanish, and much more with the portuguese and Brazil.

French was more symbolic than functional since France was the bastion of freedom.

France was also a serious economic and military rival to Britain. What's more, French was regarded as the language of law, diplomacy and high culture.

I agree to an extent, though the UK is still among the top ten biggest economies, is still a nuclear power, still among the biggest exporters of media (TV programmes, films, music) after the USA...

Portuguese, yes. With Spanish, only Mexico and Argentina come anywhere close to the cultural, economic and military power of Spain itself. (In terms of overall size of their economies, not GDP per capita).
