I wonder, our modern sophistication (?) aside.. should a contemporary male (from Western World, for this notion's sake) be considered less or more autonomous than earlier (recent, relatively speaking) epochs' men?

Your reference to nihilism reminded me of a friend I once had:

He spent 9 months inside a mental facility on account of a severe case of Pure-OCD. The themes he obsessed about centred on insufficiencies (as he saw it) of evidence:

1) He couldn't prove to himself ,to his satisfaction, that what he understood to be his life/cognition, are not just parts of a dream (not necessarily his own, either)

2) He couldn't prove to himself, to his satisfaction, that predeterminism is not the keystone to understanding existence.

In fact, the sensation of understanding socially disoriented persons more than normative people, is a bit preoccupying about the mental sanity of our societies.
We tend to simplify the complex and complexify the simple.

The fact that shows like The View and Soap Operas directed at women are popular and are all shown in the late mornings and early afternoons makes me think house work isn't exactly all that demanding of one's time. You can pretty much get everything done in a couple of hours.
