In another thread, I pointed out that Mexicans have managed to hang on to their culture and traditions remarkably well considering their geography and history. Unfortunately, the same doesn't seem so true of Dominicans, despite the fact you have a lot of sea separating yourselves from the USA, which Mexico does not.

While of course Haiti is substantially poorer and blacker than DR, at another level I do see a whiff of 'horseshoe theory' in operation: for Papa Doc read Trujillo, for Baby Doc read Balaguer mark one, for Aristide read Balaguer mark two, for Preval read Leonel Fernandes...
