I don't have the answer to this, as l had, like you pondered about it. I could only speculate that Aromanians like other Balkan Shepherds followed their own herds for better pastures, they never had defined true borders, meaning they never were sedentary to one locality and exposed to definate pressures from authorities from a 'defined area'.

It does seem that, for whatever reasons (geography featuring prominently among them, I'm guessing), that area around Greece/Albania/Macedonia allowed for Romance speakers to survive the Modern period's tumults most thoroughly..

On a mild tangent, I'd argue that Moscopole should be included in any discussion comparing the Vlachness of Serbia and Albania..
