North Italians to me look quite similar to South Italians despite the large genetic gap. All very attractive, but all quite dark people. I perceive a much larger gap between north and south french people phenotypically. But it may be my frame of reference is mostly north Europeans; hence non north Europeans suddenly look quite 'other'. For South Europeans it may be the opposite. I imagine for example, Chinese people see more regional variation among their own than among Europeans, despite all looking similar to my European eye
